Take the guesswork out of your setups with precision depth-gauge measuring. Inspired by the classic no longer available Luthier’s Mercantile International (LMI) design, this Digital String Height Gauge gives you fast, ultra-accurate, and repeatable measurements for nut slotting, action, and neck relief.
As a luthier, I built this because I wanted a lightweight, incredibly versatile tool for my own shop, one that handles non-standard setups without breaking the bank. Traditional brass gauges are heavy, costly, and restricted by rigid string spacings. This gauge uses a compact, non-marring design based on a digital caliper mechanism, delivering exact real-time readouts.
Why Luthiers and Techs Love This Design:
-
Universal Compatibility: Unlike heavy metal gauges restricted to standard electric string spacing, the open, flexible footprint works seamlessly on standard 6-strings, wide bass setups, 7/8-strings, and multi-course instruments (like 12-strings and mandolins).
-
Instrument-Safe & Lightweight: Built with a lightweight body so you never have to worry about dropping a heavy brass weight onto a fine finish or causing dents while measuring.
-
Simple Zeroing Routine: Place the plunger against the fret or string, press the Zero button, and instantly measure your distance in positive or negative numbers as you cut slots or adjust action.
-
Repeatable Precision: Takes the guesswork out of setup notes. Dial in exact specs across multiple guitars for identical playability every single time.
I make these individually in small batches for fellow builders and techs who want high-end setup repeatability at an affordable price. I pretty much break even on these.
