Digital String Height Gauge - McGrath Guitars
Building more this week! I'm making a new batch of these gauges right now. If it shows sold out, check back in a few days, or send me a message and I'll let you know as soon as they're ready.
A digital string height gauge for nut slots, neck relief and action. It's based on the LMI gauge that's no longer made: set the base on a fret, press zero, and read the gap between the top of the fret and the bottom of the string straight off the display.
I built it for my own shop because I wanted something light that works on any instrument, not just a standard 6-string. Brass gauges are heavy, expensive and made for one string spacing. This one has an open base and a digital caliper readout, so it fits wherever the strings are.
What it's for
- Nut slots: zero it with the string pressed to the 1st fret, then file and check the slot without zeroing again.
- Neck relief: measure at the 7th or 8th fret with a capo on the 1st.
- Action: check string height at the 12th fret on the low and high strings.
- Any instrument: basses, 6, 7 and 8-strings, 12-strings and mandolins.
- Safe on finishes: the body is light, so there's no heavy brass block to drop on a top.
- Repeatable setups: write the numbers down and set the next instrument up the same way. The instructions include a setup log.
I make these myself in small batches and sell them for about what they cost me to make.
Instructions: how to zero and read it, what to measure where, typical starting specs for electric, acoustic and bass, and a printable setup log: read the String Height Gauge instructions or download the PDF.
Battery: Takes one CR2032 3V coin cell. Batteries are not included; this item ships without a battery.
