The J-Style Thunderhorse: A New Evolution

The J-Style body shape represents the latest evolution in the McGrath range. Engineered with a player-first philosophy, it features deep, ergonomic contours and a perfectly balanced profile designed to eliminate neck dive entirely. The sculpted heel provides effortless access to the higher register, ensuring the full scale is at your fingertips.

While the J-Style offers the same deep customization found in our Rebel and Thunderhorse models, we’ve streamlined our series. Our original body shape is now the P-Style, while the Thunderhorse name now specifically denotes our signature three pickup configuration originally developed in collaboration with The Bass Channel.

Triple Threat Tone

This instrument is a tonal powerhouse featuring a trio of EMG Passive HZ pickups. We’ve selected an Alnico 5 magnet for the neck to deliver classic warmth, paired with Ceramic magnets in the middle and bridge positions for punchy brightness and glassy clarity. The Bridge pickup is in the 60s position.

Total Control Three dedicated Switchcraft on and off sliders offer seven distinct wiring combinations.

Massive Headroom An EMG BQS 3 band EQ running at 18V provides incredible sonic flexibility.

Active and Passive Versatility The master volume features a push pull switch, serving as both an instant emergency mute and a gateway to vintage, uncolored passive voicings.

Built for Performance

Every detail is refined for the modern player. We moved the neck pickup back 3/8 of an inch, creating a dedicated landing zone for slap players without sacrificing that deep neck position low end.

The foundation is a resonant, lightweight solid Mahogany body paired with a stunning roasted flame maple neck and a slab ebony fingerboard. For road-worthy reliability, the neck is reinforced with carbon fiber rods and utilizes a two way spoke nut truss rod for effortless, on the fly adjustments.

The bass shown in the pictures is the exact instrument you will receive. Each of our builds is a unique one of one creation. McGrath is a two person team based in San Diego, California, and we put our heart and soul into every build.
