Introducing the Outlaw: McGrath Guitars' First Electric Guitar

Let's address the elephant in the room: while you might expect a short-scale piccolo bass, this is, in fact, a T-style electric guitar.

Our company, McGrath Guitars, has exclusively built basses up until now, but we felt it was high time we expanded our craft. Cormac has been gigging with our basses and is friends with many guitarist, so the inevitable question—"That's great, but when are you going to make me a guitar?"—had become a bit of a running joke. Well, the joke is over.

The Outlaw Design

This is McGrath Guitars #1, which we've named The Outlaw. It is clearly influenced by the classic T design, but we have smoothed and contoured every element to create a more modern-feeling, comfortable guitar.

Electronics and Controls

The sophisticated electronics on The Outlaw were designed by San Diego session musician, Ben Zinn. It features three Lollar pickups in a Nashville setup. The bridge pickup was custom-wound to have the polarity needed to achieve a classic Stratocaster sound in 3rd position, and the signature funk and quack in 2nd and 4th position.

The guitar features a 5-way selector and a blend knob that allows you to seamlessly mix in the neck pickup with the bridge pickup. This means you can blend in the neck pickup in both the bridge and middle positions, all 3 pickups in position 2 — perfect for opening expanded tonal options or smoothing out the bite from the bridge position.

The third knob is a Danny Gatton-style "Wah" tone modification. The control layout is: Volume nearest the bridge, then the Blend, followed by the Wah Tone. We intentionally added a larger gap between the blend and tone knobs to allow your pinky finger enough room for those signature Wah swells.

We are incredibly proud of this guitar. There is more to come, including some models with a more standard T Style electronics layout.
